We are excited to present our June Mission Ambassadors: Suzanne and Rick Robinson. This husband-and-wife duo delivers meals together with Meals on Wheels Central Texas every Thursday.
Their Meals on Wheels Central Texas journey first began through their work at the Texas Lottery Commission, where they were introduced to volunteer meal delivery. After retiring, they returned to the mission together in 2022, turning service into part of their weekly routine.
Their route is a true team effort: Rick drives while Suzanne heads to the door. After years of delivering side by side, the routine feels natural. But while they have the process down, it’s the people they meet each week that keep them coming back.
Through years of showing up consistently, Suzanne and Rick have built relationships not only with the neighbors on their route, but also with the meal managers and volunteers they see regularly at the Central Kitchen. Seeing those familiar faces has become a comforting reminder of why they began delivering with Meals on Wheels Central Texas all those years ago.
As native Austinites, Suzanne and Rick have watched the city go through monumental changes. While Austin continues to grow and change, they intentionally seek out opportunities to stay connected to the community that has always made the city feel like home. Even though they live further north, they choose to volunteer at the Central Kitchen because of the people they’ve found there.
What means the most, though, is showing up for the neighbors at the door. Over the years, Suzanne and Rick have crossed paths with many incredible people on their route. One neighbor in particular stands out. She’s a retired school teacher in her 90s who always lights up when she sees the couple arrive. For Suzanne, seeing her neighbor up and moving, still able to get to the door at her age, never gets old. “It lights up my heart,” says Suzanne.
Moments like these are what bring Suzanne and Rick back week after week. Each knock is a chance to check in and share a warm moment with the people who have truly become their neighbors.
Thank you, Suzanne and Rick, for your continued commitment to our mission. You are a vital part of an important effort to show up for and support our neighbors.
