Through our Community Champions program, local leaders experience firsthand how meal delivery for seniors strengthens connections, reduces social isolation, and helps older adults age safely and independently in their own homes.
Recently, Dr. Lindsey Wilson, Director of Austin Equity and Inclusion, Human Rights Officer Shafina Khaki, and Civil Rights Officer Enrique Serrano joined Meals on Wheels Central Texas staff on a delivery route, seeing firsthand how every knock on a neighbor’s door creates meaningful connection.
Austin Equity and Inclusion works to remove barriers, increase access, and create opportunities for every Austin resident to thrive. Those values closely align with the mission of Meals on Wheels Central Texas, which supports thousands of older adults across Central Texas through nutritious meals and companionship.
After completing her route, Dr. Lindsey Wilson reflected on our guiding principle.
“'Connection changes everything' is the motto that guides Meals on Wheels Central Texas, and after delivering meals, I can truly say those words come to action.”
She described how every part of the experience, from picking up thoughtfully prepared meals to greeting neighbors at their front doors, was intentional.
“The connection Meals on Wheels creates is truly bidirectional,” she shared. “It not only supports those receiving meals but also enriches those who serve.”
For Dr. Wilson, the experience demonstrated that Meals on Wheels Central Texas creates opportunities for volunteers and neighbors to build relationships, better understand one another, and strengthen the fabric of the community.
Human Rights Officer Shafina Khaki also experienced firsthand the care that goes into every meal.
“The meal was fresh, delicious, and thoughtfully prepared,” she said after trying our vegetarian option, “More importantly, it was clear that every meal is made with care and delivered with compassion.”
As she visited neighbors along the delivery route, she witnessed the impact that regular visits have on older adults.
“Seeing the smiles, gratitude, and genuine connections was a powerful reminder that Meals on Wheels Central Texas provides so much more than a meal—it delivers kindness, companionship, and reassurance to those who need it most.”
These daily interactions help reduce loneliness while providing reassurance that someone is checking in on each neighbor’s well-being.
Civil Rights Officer Enrique Serrano was equally impressed by both the quality of the meals and the experience of delivering them.
He noted that each meal was well-balanced, nutritious, and carefully prepared to provide both comfort and nourishment.
What stood out most, however, were the conversations at each stop.
“Each doorstep visit was met with genuine gratitude and friendly conversation,” Serrano said. “It was moving to see firsthand how much these meals mean to those who receive them, not just as nourishment but as a reminder that their community cares.”
By the end of the route, he left feeling more connected to the community and inspired to continue giving back.
Why the Community Champions Program Matters
The Community Champions program gives local leaders an opportunity to step into the role of a Meals on Wheels Central Texas volunteer.
Participants experience firsthand how meal delivery supports older adults aging in place, combats social isolation, and provides an important safety check for neighbors who may otherwise go days without seeing another person.
For many Community Champions, one route changes the way they think about aging, volunteerism, and the importance of investing in community.
