Recently, Joan Maniere, Community Support Director at Shalom Austin, joined Meals on Wheels Central Texas for a behind-the-scenes look at our mission and the work behind serving thousands of older adults across Central Texas.
With a career rooted in communication, community engagement, and service, Joan has long been passionate about connecting people to volunteerism and community-based opportunities. For Joan, experiencing Meals on Wheels Central Texas firsthand offered a new perspective on the importance of community support for older adults.
“I am proud to be recognized as a Community Champion, and getting a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to prepare and deliver nearly 3,000 meals each day was truly inspiring,” Joan shared.
While the scale of the operation made an impression, Joan said what stood out the most was the breadth of support Meals on Wheels Central Texas provides beyond the meal itself.
“Through services such as home repairs, caregiver support, pet care, and opportunities for social connection, Meals on Wheels provides holistic support that helps older adults age in place with dignity, independence, and a strong sense of community.”
That holistic approach reflects the heart of our mission. A nutritious meal can help address food insecurity and support health, but the knock on the door can be just as meaningful. Regular visits create opportunities for conversation, connection, and reassurance while helping neighbors remain engaged with their communities.
For Joan, seeing that mission in action reinforced the importance of building relationships into every aspect of service.
“It is powerful to see how every interaction is rooted in care, compassion, and relationship-building, creating meaningful connections that make a lasting impact on the lives of older adults,” she said.
