Zach Baumer, Director of Austin Climate Action & Resilience, joined Meals on Wheels Central Texas for a meal tasting and delivery route, gaining a firsthand look at how neighbors, volunteers, and community organizations work together to improve quality of life across Central Texas.

As Director of Austin Climate Action & Resilience, Zach has dedicated more than a decade to serving the Austin community through climate initiatives that improve the city’s environmental health. He has spent his career advancing programs that address climate change while creating a stronger, healthier future for Austin residents. Throughout his tenure, he has helped lead initiatives that positively impact the environment and the people who call Austin home.

That commitment to strengthening communities made the Community Champions experience a natural fit.

By delivering meals alongside Meals on Wheels Central Texas staff, Zach saw firsthand how a simple knock on the door can provide reassurance, companionship, and connection for older adults who may otherwise spend much of their day alone.

As part of the experience, Community Champions have the opportunity to enjoy the same nutritious meals that are delivered to neighbors each day.

Zach was impressed by both the quality and freshness of the meal, saying, “I really enjoyed the food. It was fresh, not processed, and tasted like a home-cooked meal.”

Every meal delivered by Meals on Wheels Central Texas is carefully prepared to meet the nutritional needs of older adults while providing the comfort and familiarity of a home-style meal. For most of our neighbors, these meals are an important source of nutrition that helps them maintain their health and independence.

For Community Champions like Zach, spending time on a delivery route offers a deeper understanding of the challenges many older adults face and the impact volunteers have with every stop.

It’s a reminder that building resilient communities isn’t just about infrastructure or planning; it’s also about ensuring people feel connected, cared for, and supported.

Meals on Wheels Central Texas is proud to partner with leaders like Zach Baumer who are committed to making Central Texas stronger and healthier for everyone.

If your organization is looking for a meaningful way to engage employees, connect with the community, or better understand the needs of older adults, consider becoming a Community Champion. Join us on a delivery route and experience how one knock on the door can create a lasting impact.
